Changes on a Kitchen Cabinet

Hi there!
Today I thought Id share some photos of a few changes I made yesterday in our kitchen.  You may have noticed if youve looked at our kitchen photos before that our kitchen is a little awkward and has limited cabinet space.  Shortly after we moved in, I found this freestanding wood cabinet and brought it home for extra storage.  It stands next to our other freestanding white cabinet, which we use as a pantry.

Previously Ive used the shelves above the cabinet to store pretty dishes, but recently I "bought" (I put bought in quotations since really these were practically given to me... more on that in a minute) three half-gallon size mason jars to add to the one I already had and yesterday realized I should actually utilize these jars to store some dry foods.

And as it happens, these three jars come with a story... can you believe that last week I had the opportunity to meet somebody that I found through my blog?  I never imagined that a fellow blogger would live less than an hour away from me... and that I would not only meet her in person, but actually consider her a true friend!  But last week Amy was having a vintage yard sale and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to meet.  And it was... Amy is so genuinely sweet, has the loveliest family, a beautiful home and amazing style.  (If you havent visited her blog, All Things Home, you must be sure to stop by and say hello.  Youll love her!)

I filled the jars with dry foods I use frequently, like rice and grits.

I did leave a shelf for these pretty cups and saucers though... I love this pattern.

I also have some antique silverware displayed here.  I have two sets of mismatched silverware... one set we use, but this set the plating has chipped in spots so it just sits here looking pretty in an old crock.

I bought most of this together and I knew it was meant for me when I found one piece monogrammed with an "A".  (smile)

An old postage scale.  I love this old scale because it actually works.

(In fact, one day I actually noticed my scale missing and later found out my dad had borrowed it to weigh some animal feed!)

Looking forward to doing some canning this summer...

The cabinet itself is used to store additional cookbooks, my Bosch mixer and aprons.

Anyway, its always fun to make a few changes, especially when it frees up room in the pantry!  And this display seems so appropriate for our farmhouse kitchen.

What do you like to use your vintage mason jars for?

New Studio Workshop Before and After

Hey everybody!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends.

I spent lots of time working on my new "studio" which is in the back of our new shop that we are currently designing.  Its so nice to have a warm place to make my bread boards now instead of using the gravel carport behind our house.  I know this is nothing that exciting but I wanted to show you how it looked before I worked on it.
In a word, gross.  This place use to be a taxidermy business so there was all kinds of this and that splattered on the walls and floor.  Im not sure what it was and I really dont want to know either, Im just happy its gone now.  First thing I did was pull up the floor.
Then I replaced it with parquet wood floor tiles.  Next, the ick splattered cabinets had to go.  I gave them a good cleaning and coat or two of Kilz, then, another three coats of Valspar Ultra White paint in semi gloss.  Im thinking about adding knobs, just not sure what kind yet.  Then I sanded down the wood countertop and put a coat of Minwax Special Walnut stain.  The doors also received a coat of ultra white and the walls are painted with
Elmira White by Benjamin Moore.
I still need to add a few more things and install baseboards at some point.
Heres what it looks like now.
I also brought in some personal things to make it feel homey.  I know its just a workshop but I really believe in surrounding yourself with things that make you happy, especially when working.  I also brought in this stainless steel table which is so perfect for working on.  The stool was left behind so I cleaned it and recovered it with an old coffee bean sack.
I am so happy with the entire room and it really inspired hubby to get to work in the other rooms.

One really special thing I wanted to share about this place is that its right across the street from my dads old office before he passed away.  I just think thats pretty cool since this all happened because of my bread boards, which were inspired by my dad.  That makes me smile and I know hes smiling, too.

Cant wait to share the rest of the place with you soon!
Have a great day!

A Vintage Nursery

Today I thought I would share a tour of my daughters nursery.  The warmth of the original beadboard walls were too beautiful to cover with paint, so my goal was soft, simple and romantic to keep the room from looking too dark.

I also wanted to be as resourceful as possible when decorating the room, so most of the items are local vintage finds.  For fun I thought I would share with you the price of each item I purchased.

Plates above bed: $8

I found this vintage bedside table at our local antique mall.  I fell in love with the spindle legs.  On the lower shelf I purchased two vintage locker baskets to fill with lightweight blankets and burp cloths.

Table: $25
Vintage Lockers: $18 each

I found this lamp years ago at a little store before I was even married.  It has been a favorite lamp of mine since and somehow it seemed like it was meant for this room.

Rosetta is our second daughter, so we had many items on hand already.  This picture is the first thing I purchased specifically for Rosettas room.  I think the portrait of mother and daughter is beautiful.  The frame is original and made out of wood.

Frame and picture: $35

Oddly enough, this repurposed headboard at the foot of the bed gets the most inquiries.  I store larger blankets inside.

Although this is the only thing yellow in the room, it gives a pop of color.

Blanket Holder :$40

In the corner of the room is a rocker with a sweet crocheted blanket draped over the back that was a gift.

I love old crates, whether they are metal or wood, and Ive used this old milk crate on the floor for storing toys.

The antique mirror on the wall was given to me by a friend who found it at the dump!

Milk Crate: $25

Do you see the canning lid on the wall?  Apparently that is how "holes" were covered in the wood years ago!

On the opposite wall from the bed is the crib.  We changed the furniture around several times before deciding to place it underneath the mantle (the fireplace is closed up).  Originally this room was our guest room.  It is a very large room (15 x 15) so we were able to leave the Queen sized bed.

The bed skirt and quilt were made by my mom.  I just love the choice of fabric.  Soft and sweet.

The crib was a gift from my mother-in-law for our first daughter and Im so glad we can use it again, because it is truly beautiful.  Although it is new, the spindles give it such an old time look.

Ive limited the decorations on the mantle above the crib to very few things for safety reasons.  This Mother Goose book is an antique and the little box is a vintage find.

Book: $5
Box: $1

On the floor beside the crib is an old gasoline can.  Ive always loved the color of the blue paint.

Can: $10

On the side wall is a piece of furniture I purchased for our first daughters nursery.  Im not sure what its purpose was and Ive never seen a piece like it.  The top piece is attached to the lower buffet and is covered by a very thick piece of old glass.  Inside I store clothes.

This was probably one of my first vintage purchases... Im pretty sure I heard my husband muttering, "What a piece of junk".  (smile)

On the left side of the buffet is a three-tiered basket caddy I found at Hobby Lobby.  I painted it white and I keep socks, shoes and other items in the baskets.

The fence on the wall is very sentimental to me.  My husband made it for me as a surprise birthday present about 8 years ago after I had admired something similar.

Yes, he is pretty special.

Buffet: $50
Antique Bell: $10

The four teacups displayed on the buffet are from Anthropologie.

On the right side of the buffet is an old tin canister I found.  Inside I store diapers.

Tin Canister: $15

Hanging on the wall by the door is a picture of an ewe with her baby lamb.

Frame and picture: $30

Sweet baby decor.

Of course this proud mommy has to show a picture of whom this room belongs to. Rosetta is almost 8 months old, sitting up by herself, and crawling.

She is precious. xo
